The Mou Waho Hike: Does It Live Up to the Hype?

Short answer: yes. Longer answer: here's exactly what to expect before you commit.

The Numbers, Honestly

The walk to Arethusa Pool is about 2.6 kilometres return, with roughly 170 metres of elevation gain, and takes most people somewhere between one and one and a half hours at a comfortable pace. That puts it solidly in "moderate" territory — enough to notice you're climbing, not enough to need any real hiking experience.

Where It Actually Gets Steep

The track isn't steep the whole way — most of it winds gently through native bush, well-shaded and easy underfoot. The steep sections are short and concentrated near the top, where the path narrows and climbs more directly to the ridge. Good shoes matter more than fitness here; after rain, a few sections turn genuinely slippery.

It's not a hard walk. It's a walk with a few hard minutes in it.

What You Get for the Effort

The reward at the top is Arethusa Pool itself — a small glacial lake with a lookout giving sweeping views back down over Lake Wānaka and out to the Southern Alps. It's the kind of view that makes the steep bit at the end feel entirely worth it, and most people linger longer than they planned to.

So, Worth It?

For anyone of reasonably average fitness, yes, without much hesitation. It suits families, casual walkers, and anyone who wants a proper payoff without a proper mountain. The honest caveat: if you struggle with uneven ground or steep, narrow sections, budget extra time and take it slowly near the top rather than skipping it — the view really is worth the last stretch.
